2025: May Reads!!

William by Mason Coile

A horror in which an inventor with agoraphobia creates an A.I. … being. The problem is that he’s made it a little too well and it begins to make its own decisions. It begins to make very bad decisions…deadly decision. I loved the suspense in this book. Great twist at the end that I didn’t see coming! I loved it.

A Unicorn, A Dinosaur and a Shark Were Riding a Bicycle by Jonathan Fenske

Wonderful illustrations in this book and it is really funny! I loved that they little characters speak to the kiddo reading the book (or adult!). Quirky and entertaining. Second in a series and I highly recommend the first book!

The Turning Tide by Esme Taylor

I liked the premise behind this one… it was a little light on plot. Nothing wrong with the style of writing, actually, I think the author could have made this one a lot longer! The three MCs are terrific and it would be have been nice to get to know more about them. Spicy!

Summer Shadows by John Harris Dunning

Nick is searching for a lost friend and he’s about to discover not everything is what it seems. You’d think with all the sun and beaches on the Greek Islands that there wouldn’t be a lot of vampires lurking around but they’ve come up with a perfect plan for drawing people in. At night the vampires throw lavish and hedonistic parties on a yacht…and isn’t that just the right thing to lure in tourists. Loved the supporting characters… this captures a great mix of old scary tails, lost souls and the dark underground.

My Heart Is A Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones

My gosh I wanted to like this book. It’s just not a style that I could mesh with though. I loved the idea, and I still think it’s great…but I had some problems with the format. I have watched a LOT Of horror movies and so many references went over my head. I had to look up a lot while I was reading. I also found the dialogue really stilted and confusing sometimes. It’s really popular though !!!!

When the Tides Held the Moon by Venessa Vida Kelley

So much love for this book. It is a loose retelling of the Little Mermaid. The focus is on the otherness of being an immigrant. The author’s illustrations and beautiful and add so much to the story. Loved the main characters.

Ascension by S.T. Gibson

This is one of my favourite magical series. Gibson is a wizard when it comes to creating unique and engaging characters. Powerful, flawed, epic characters. A magical world that explores interesting differences in magical practice while also exploring a unique poly relationship.

How to Flaunt Your Chains and Surrender a Vein by D.N. Brynn

This is a really great story.  I love every one of the author’s vampires, but I think Rahil may be my new favourite. He is a flamboyant, charming, adorable, caring, troubled ball of mayhem and I loved everything about him. Mercer is the very epitome of “still waters run deep”. There’s a lot going on beneath the outer appearances of his life and so much of it is beyond his control. Maybe that’s why he likes control in other areas of his life. Great diversity in this author’s novels.

A Deception of Courts by Ben Alderson

AHHH this series is killing me! What I love most about these books is the way that Ben manages to create characters that are complex enough to really confuse my emotions. It takes skill to create a character, make the reader love them, do something to that character that changes them dramatically and leave the reader not knowing how to feel about them anymore. Ben is a genius when it comes to characters that are so steeped in duality that it becomes impossible to pull it all apart. The great thing about these kinds of characters is that they feel “real”. Real people are complex. We make challenging decisions, we let our emotions get the better of us, we make choices that don’t make sense – and all of these things happen to the characters in Ben’s books. The way these characters come to life on the page is really engaging. I really felt for them.

Black Dog by Levi Pinfold

A beautiful children’s story about big things that can seem overwhelming at first but become smaller and more manageable as you get to know them. Levi’s illustrations are absolutely remarkable. So much detail, adorable… lovely. The book is beautiful things.

The Meaning of you by jay Hogan

Nick’s husband Davis has passed away after being in a vegetative state for more than a year. While he is visiting the care home he meets Madigan and the two men become friends. Then Nick uncovers some things about his deceased husband’s life that he didn’t know previously… things that make him question everything. The two men embrace on a journey to solved the murder. A well-written mystery, a meaningful exploration of grief and growth. Beautiful story by a fantastic author.

Brim Over Boot by Emmy Sanders

Emmy has done it again! The second book in the Darling Brothers series was a wonderful, enemies to lovers, confused cowboys, The snark and bitching is real and I adored every hilarious moment of it. This is a great addition to the series and I can’t wait to read more! There are two Darling brothers that Emmy has yet to write about!!
