REVIEW: I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

Now a Netflix original movie, this deeply scary and intensely unnerving novel follows a couple in the midst of a twisted unraveling of the darkest unease. You will be scared. But you won’t know why…

I’m thinking of ending things. Once this thought arrives, it stays. It sticks. It lingers. It’s always there. Always.

Jake once said, “Sometimes a thought is closer to truth, to reality, than an action. You can say anything, you can do anything, but you can’t fake a thought.”

And here’s what I’m thinking: I don’t want to be here.

In this smart and intense literary suspense novel, Iain Reid explores the depths of the human psyche, questioning consciousness, free will, the value of relationships, fear, and the limitations of solitude. Tense, gripping, and atmospheric, I’m Thinking of Ending Things pulls you in from the very first page…and never lets you go.

THE GOOD BITS

I had no idea what this book was about when I got it. I had put it on my “Want to read” shelf a long time back and my friend, Gladys remembered and snagged it for me when it came into her bookstore.

I’m glad that I wasn’t aware of the subject matter because I was able to accept the story in the way it was presented. This is one of those situations in which writing a book review is tricky. I don’t want to give anything away.

Reid has written a touching story. The characters are a bit off-putting, unbalanced and that really sets the mood for this novel. The story is sort of like walking along a balance beam and not knowing at which point you may slip off. It’s probably the foreboding sense that something is coming… it’s clear from the beginning that this is going to be a challenging story and it definitely is.

The writing is smooth and disconcerting at the same time… a talent to say the least.

There and odd twists, hints and a mysterious ending. Very original and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
