THE GOOD BITS
I was pleasantly surprised by this one! It’s so engaging! Even the first few pages drew me in and I knew I was going to love it.
Keller Hartman is the best gunner in the academy…and then he is appointment to a new and cutting edge team. The problem is, he’s coming in to fill the position of a gunner who was killed. When he first arrives, his new pilot Lament won’t even give him the time of day and certainly won’t let him in the ship.
As the story unfolds, there are battles, friendships, relationships, and political intrigue. Keller was abandoned by his mother when he was young and was raised by a Master he loved. But, he didn’t feel destined for anything other than being a gunner.
Lament is a pilot mourning the loss of his friend, Bast. The trauma of the loss is still a heavy weight on Lament and he doesn’t want anything to do with his newly assigned gunner. There is a lot of loss explored in this book: loss of family, loss of friends, loss of dreams. The story is moving at times and still manages to be amusing at others.
There is a lot of mystery in this novel and the pacing is great. There were some timely and surprising reveals, and a masterful approach to world building and tension! The overall plot was very satisfying and I found that the squad of friends were a lovely addition. Each character was fully fleshed out and interesting.
I loved the conflicting believe systems of “Determinists” and “Randomists” – very timely considering what has been going on in the world.
If you want to read a great SF, with some real authentic emotions sprinkled in and topped off with “rabid space mist’… then pick this one up.
