REVIEW: The Frog Prince by A.M. Rose

A man without a crown could still be a prince. But what about a monster?

Adalwin has always been a prince.

Born into royalty as the heir to the throne of Hallin, he was raised to rule a kingdom.

Only, the one he receives is not the one he expected.

Cruelly cursed and presumed dead by all who once knew him, his kingdom is now made up of a murky glen where water-splashers dwell and crooked linden trees block the light. Sitting on a throne built from bracken and moss, his only subjects are those creatures that won’t run in terror at first glance.

After all, who could swear fealty to a monster?

Only the bravest cross the borders into the Frog Prince’s kingdom, drawn by whispered rumors of a boon should you meet his price. An opportunity for him to show the man underneath the monster—a chance to break the curse’s shackles and return home.

When a beautiful, kind-hearted man with hair blessed by the sun itself stumbles into his lair looking to make a deal, more than just Adalwin’s interest is stirred. Maybe his lonely heart is too.

But when the man tries to break the deal, the Frog Prince must come to collect.

Each book set in the GriMM fairytale world can be read as a standalone and contains its own Happily Ever After story. But we do recommend reading each one, as the tales are connected to each other in multiple magical ways.

THE GOOD BITS

I never thought I would read a book about so many frogs and find myself loving them by the end. I mean, I don’t have a problem with frogs, but they will forever be gossipy little tricksters in my brain from now on.

A.M. Rose has crafted a new and spicy version of The Frog Prince that fits seamlessly into the GriMM Tales series. If you’ve been following my reviews, you’ll know that this series of books is all set in the same world and many of the characters crossover. The authors have somehow managed to write standalone books that have a shared narrative that runs through the entirety of the series.

Prince Adalwin disappeared without a trace; his family had no idea what had happened to him. He was trapped, however, in a life that he didn’t deserve. Adalwin is now the Frog Prince, and he is destined to live out his years in a pond with his frogs unless… he can get someone to love him for who he is… despite the fact that he is a frog.

It might seem like this is a simple tale, but Rose has transformed it into something quite entertaining. When Otto stumbles into the grotto looking for a cure for his sister’s illness, he meets the Frog Prince and makes a deal with him.

This has everything that a fairy tale needs: a love interest, a villain, both blood and found family, intrigue and a crowd of feisty, gossipy, frogs. I can’t tell you enough about how much I loved the frogs. I didn’t go into this expecting that frogs would have such a role to play in this story.

This is a great tale with all the right ingredients for a lovely retelling.
