We are What We Do

I know that we are not “supposed” to define ourselves by our occupations but I think everyone falls prey to it every now and again. I mean, when I’m told to introduce myself to a group I nearly always say where I work.

When I went to photography school I struggled with saying “I’m a photographer”. When people ask me if I’m a professional photographer I still struggle with my answer. How many photos does one have to sell before that title is fitting? I’ve had shows, I’ve sold work, I’ve been paid multiple times for my work as a photographer. Still when most people ask me what I do I tell them I work at the library.

Don’t even get me started on whether or not I’m a writer.

The funny thing is that it’s not the first thing I think of when describing other people.
